FAQs

  • How do I know if I or my child have anxiety or mood symptoms that warrant treatment?

Anxiety or mood disorder diagnoses are provided based on the frequency, duration, and severity of symptoms as well as the impact on overall functioning (including social, familial, and academic). Whether or not you or your child meet the criteria for an anxiety or mood disorder, specialized CBT treatment can increase one’s tolerance for discomfort, build resilience, and reduce the impact of symptoms.

  • What can I expect during the first session?

The first two appointments are diagnostic evaluation sessions. For minor clients, the first appointment is exclusively for parents or guardians. This provides an opportunity for caregivers to openly and candidly share family history and present concerns. During this session, initial treatment goals will be identified, and discussions will be had regarding the caregiver's role in treatment and how progress will be measured. The second appointment is reserved for the minor client's diagnostic evaluation. During this session, time is spent introducing the child to the therapeutic environment, building rapport, discussing presenting concerns, and providing psychoeducation.

For adults, the first appointment will also be a diagnostic evaluation session. Initial treatment goals will be identified, and discussions will be had regarding other individuals in your life, their roles in treatment, and ways to measure therapeutic progress. This initial intake session is also used to introduce you to the therapeutic environment, establish rapport, discuss presenting concerns, and begin to provide psychoeducation regarding your customized treatment plan.

  • Do you accept insurance?

We do not accept insurance and are happy to provide a statement you can submit to your insurance provider as a claim for any reimbursement applicable for out-of-network benefits.

  • How can I pursue insurance reimbursement using my out-of-network benefits?

Contact your insurance company directly to inquire about your out-of-network benefits. Many are eligible to receive a percentage of the amounts paid in reimbursement. My clients are provided with monthly superbill receipts that include all the information typically needed for those seeking insurance reimbursement.

  • How often will I or my child attend sessions?

Weekly sessions are recommended until progress is noted toward treatment goals. Once progress is made, a decrease in session frequency to every two weeks is often warranted. Once all treatment goals have been met, a further decrease to monthly maintenance sessions is recommended to maintain progress. Oftentimes, after several months of monthly maintenance sessions, clients are either discharged or continue with quarterly mental wellness or ‘booster’ sessions. Just as children have wellness visits with their pediatricians, many families continue with quarterly mental wellness sessions to maintain and monitor progress, learn adaptive coping skills, and preserve the therapeutic relationship. This is especially helpful should problems arise later in development, as the client already has therapeutic support in place.

  • How long is the treatment process?

Individuals progress at their own pace, and the length of active treatment varies based on several factors such as the number of treatment goals, severity of symptoms, and response to interventions.

Consistent weekly treatment sessions and client engagement with the recommendations and weekly tasks assigned between sessions make the treatment process more effective and efficient. Although progress can vary, most clients achieve their treatment goals after approximately 24 sessions.

  • Are there things I or my child can do in between sessions to maximize treatment?

Absolutely! Weekly missions are recommended between sessions. Whether it be skills to practice, data to be collected, or exposures to engage in, participation in weekly missions is an important part of the cognitive behavioral treatment process and the client’s progress.

  • What if I or my child needs medication? Do you prescribe?

I do not prescribe medications. However, if you need a medication consult, I can refer you to skilled providers who are authorized to prescribe.
